New York residents might be in with a chance for some relief these summer months as the temperatures crank up to unbearable levels in the Big Apple.

As the sweltering summer months approach, New Yorkers are bracing for intense heat waves.

But there’s good news for low-income residents struggling to keep cool: New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $15 million funding boost through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) to provide air conditioners to those in need.

If you’re eligible, you could receive up to $800 for a window or portable air conditioning unit or fan, including installation for a window unit. 

Up to $1,000 in Assistance

This program not only covers the cost of the cooling system but also includes administrative costs, labor, program support, materials, and even minor repairs needed for safe installation.

Do You Qualify for a Free Air Conditioner?

Eligibility for this life-saving program depends on several factors. Here’s what you need to know: Assistance Programs: If you receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Temporary Assistance (TA), or Code A Supplemental Security Income (SSI Living Alone), you might qualify.

Prioritizing the Vulnerable

Vulnerable Members: Households with elderly members (60 years or older), young children (under age 6), or individuals with medical conditions exacerbated by extreme heat are prioritized.

Citizenship Requirements

Citizenship: At least one member of your household must be a United States Citizen or Qualified Non-Citizen.

Replacing Old or Non-Working ACs

Existing Cooling Systems: You currently do not have a working air conditioner or the one you have is five years old or older. Additionally, you should not have received a HEAP-funded air conditioner within the past five years.

Check Your Household’s Eligibility

Income Guidelines: Your household’s gross monthly income must be at or below the following limits: 1 person: $3,035, 2 people: $3,970, 3 people: $4,904, 4 people: $5,838, 5 people: $6,772, 6 people: $7,706, 7 people: $7,881, 8 people: $8,056, 9 people: $8,231, 10 people: $8,407, 11 people: $8,582, 12 people: $8,890, 13 people: $9,532, Each additional person: Add $642.

To apply for the cooling assistance, be prepared to provide: Proof of Residence: Documents showing your address. Proof of Income: Recent pay Governor Hochulstubs, benefits statements, or other income documentation.

Proof of Identity: Valid identification for all household members. Proof of Social Security: Social Security cards for all household members. Medical Condition Documentation: If applicable, a doctor’s note or medical records unless you have a household member who is elderly or a young child.

Governor Hochul explained that “The cooling assistance program is a vital lifeline for countless New York families who often face prohibitively expensive cooling costs when temperatures inevitably rise.”

She went on to state, “As temperatures rise across the state, we are committed to ensuring that low-income and disadvantaged households have the means to stay safe, comfortable, and cool in their own homes.”

Expected Impact in 2024

In total, about 27,000 households are expected to get cooling help in 2024. Last year, over $17 million helped over 21,000 households in New York. In the past five years, nearly 67,000 households have benefited from the program.
